Ouch

"How many lives are wasted by people who believe that the Christian life means simply avoiding badness and providing for the family. So there is no adultery, no stealing, no killing, no embezzlement, no fraud - just lots of hard work during the day, and lots of TV and PG-13 videos/DVDs in the evening (during quality family time), and lots of fun stuff on the weekend - woven around church (mostly). This is life, for millions of people. Wasted life. We were created for more, far more....

....no one will ever want to say to the Lord of the universe five minutes after death, I spent every night playing games and watching clean TV with my family because I loved them so much. I think the Lord will say, "That does not make me look like a treasure in your town. You should have done something besides provide for yourself and your family. And TV, as you should have known, was not a good way to nurture your family or your own soul."

From "Don't Waste Your Life." We're discussing it tomorrow afternoon at Book Chat. Lots of good stuff in it. I think the above quote is a direct challenge to most Christians in Western society.

Yep, I'd agree. Especially as someone who is passionate about living life more than this; we feel the weight of that at home. Many people at churches just don't ever come near to even talking to us because we represent a way of life too threatening to their comfortable lives.

Amen, Wendy. And we watched everyone avoid you when you came to our church on your last home assignment. We haven't read the book but it's on my list after One Thousand gifts. Karen, I wish i was in your book club.

And people wonder why missionaries feel lonely at times - even in our own country!

I was given that book for my 21st. The friends who gave it to me explained it wasn't because they thought I was wasting my life and a book was a more subtle way of saying that lol!

Maybe I've been avoiding reading it for the past 7.5 years because just the title does threaten my comfortable life. Time to be challenged...

I've been really challenged reading this book, and thanks for those comments ladies. I was just discussing it with Chris and we were talking about how the outward activities we do reflect our focus in life. The activities mentioned may be harmless in and of themselves but how do they help point us (and others) towards Jesus? Not very well, I'd suggest...in fact, they make us look very self-focused and hedonistic :(

Just wanted to say too Helen...thanks for the encouraging words about wishing you could be in it. We don't get a very big turn out given the size of our church (and the number of ladies in it that I know read books!)...I have found it a bit discouraging as the year has gone on :( But we do have a few who are really keen, that keep me hanging in there...
